Welcome to the website of Metropolitan A.M.E. Church, the National Cathedral of African Methodism. Since our founding, in 1838, we have been spreading Christ’s liberating gospel in Washington, DC through our various ministries and outreach. The church has also had an historic voice in the lives of black people and others throughout the nation and world.

Remembering Hurricane Katrina

The devastation that swept the Gulf Coast five years ago when Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans, Florida, Louisiana , Mississippi and Alabama left 1,800 people dead, tens of thousands of people displaced, entire sections of New Orleans destroyed. It became one of the nation’s worst natural disasters..

The story grew worse each day as the monster storm hit—people standing on rooftops crying for help, the crowds at the Superdome hungry, sick, desperate and neglected, 80 percent of New Orleans under water. Families were separated and many went to Tennessee, Arkansas, Texas and points north. The federal government drew heated criticism for failing to sufficiently respond to the victims’ desperate plight. Read more. . .

172nd Church Anniversary

BIBLICAL SCHOLAR PREACHES AT METROPOLITAN

Renowned preacher, author, divinity educator and scholar Dr. Cain Hope Felder preached at Metropolitan A.M.E. Church, 1518 M St. NW, on Sunday, July 11 at 9 a.m. for the celebration of the historic church’s 172nd anniversary. Metropolitan is the oldest AME church in the nation’s capital and has hosted US presidents, statesmen and world leaders.

Recently declared one of America’s 11 Most Endangered Historical Places by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Metropolitan will use the occasion to announce a multi-million dollar National Capital Campaign to help finance the restoration of its massive edifice. Historic Preservation and Restoration
CRAB FEAST

The Metropolitan AME Church Historic Preservation and Restoration CRAB FEAST will be held on Friday, September 17, 2010 at 7:30 PM at Martin’s Cross Winds. 7400 Greenway Center Drive, Greenbelt, Maryland.

MENU: Endless steamed, hard shelled crabs; plus a sumptuous buffet of succulent beef, pork, chicken and seafood entrees; tasty vegetables and salads; luscious desserts; and beverages.

The African Methodist Episcopal Church

The African Methodist Episcopal Church has a unique and glorious history. It was unique in that it is the first major religious denomination in the Western World that had its origin over sociological and theological beliefs and differences. It rejected the negative theological interpretations which rendered persons of African descent second class citizens. Theirs was a theological declaration that God is God all the time and for every body. The church was born in protest against slavery—against dehumanization of African people, brought to the American continent as labor. Read more…
